2006 Brunswick San Diego Classic Diary
Sunny San Diego turned out to be quite the tournament for us
Brits, filling the top four spots. Maybe The Queen turning 80 that week
had something to do with it? Maybe not.
Anyway.
Round 1
My first round came with a fashion accessory. Susan "The Hat"
Mello played aggressive as ever, chasing that 9 ball like a greyhound
to a rabbit. I managed to win 9 games to 5. It would have been closer,
but for the fact she followed through too much with the cue ball on a 9
and scratched. Sorry Susan.
Round 2
Another toughy. Janet Atwell. She is always of the 'never give
up attitude.' I don't remember too much about this match, only that it
was close all the way. She missed a crucial 7 ball which let me off the
hook and when I did get ahead, she came back stronger in the next rack.
I was very pleased to get over the finishing line 9 to 6.
Round 3
The way our tournaments are run now, the third round can be
quite a nail bitter. The winner goes through to the last 16, which is
the beginning of the single elimination rounds. They are also in the
winner's bracket, which can be huge. If you win your third match,
you've made the cut. If, however, you are a loser like me, you go back
and play another match to qualify.
Dawn Hopkins, who I lost to, played very well. She held herself
together when I was 8-6 up, to be at me 9-8.
The last 16 round
Well, I got truly RIMMED. I drew Alice Rim and she played
absolutely brilliant. I did not see a shot until the 6th rack. At that
point I was 5 to 1 down. I managed to come back to 8 to 8, but I broke
and scratched and Alice ran out the last rack.
And that was the end of Shaw.
See you in Viva Las Vegas.
